Rev. James H. McCarthy; born October 28, 1929, beloved son of the late Walter E. and late Julia (nee Doyle); loving brother of the late Margaret D. (late John E.) Reid, late Rita Cecilia Garvey, late Sr. Marion L. O.P., late Rev. Walter E. S.J., late Daniel (late Lucille Dunne) McCarthy, late Rev. Warren J. late dear Gerald Aloysius McCarthy; many nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews and great grand nieces and nephews. Ordained on May 3, 1955 at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary; he served at Santa Maria del Populo, Mundelein, IL 1955-1960; Assistant Director of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine 1960-1966; A SPRED (Special Religious Development) from 1966 to present in conjunction with colleagues, Sr. Mary Therese Harrington S.H. and Sr. Susanne Gallagher S.P. from 1966 to the present. Together they were recipients of the Laetare Medal for New Evangelization from the University of Notre Dame 2013. He resided at St. Francis of Rome, Cicero, 1960-1966; St. Gregory, 1966-1968; St. Cecilia 1968-1971; Our Lady of Mercy, 1971-1973; Pastor Emeritus of St. John Nepomucene, 1973-until closed in 1990. He has lived and worked from the SPRED Center, formerly St. John Nepomucene, from 1990 until the present. He will be waked at the Spred Center Chapel, 2959 S. Lowe Ave., on Tuesday, August 9th from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Visitation Wednesday, August 10th from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. at Holy Name Cathedral. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. by the Archbishop of Chicago the Most Reverend Cardinal Blase J. Cupich. In lieu of flowers, masses would be preferred for the repose of his soul. Memorials can be directed to Mamre, Inc. a non-profit corporation financially supportive of SPRED at 2956 S. Lowe Ave. Chicago, IL 60616. Interment will be private at Calvary Cemetery in the family plot.
