Wing Lau Obituary

Wing Lau passed away peacefully on April 17, 2023 at the age of 94. He was a man of humble beginnings who grew up in a village in the Taishan region in Guangzhou, China. In 1949, during the communist party takeover of China, Wing, at the age of 21, left for Hong Kong. In 1961 he married Mooie Chan, the love of his life. In 1962, through the sponsorship of his aunt, Wing, his wife, and his 2 month old daughter arrived in the U.S. Several years later, he and Mooie welcomed a son and another daughter to the family. Although Wing worked long hours as a chef at his aunt's Chinese restaurant in downtown Chicago, immigrating to America provided new opportunities for Wing and his family. Throughout his life, he emphasized the importance of education and hard work. Even though Wing had a limited education he did well with his real estate and stock investments and paid for the college and graduate degrees for all three of his children. Over the years, Wing became a pillar in the Chicago Chinatown community, and a month before he passed, he received an award for 35+ years of service to the Lung Kong Tin Yee Association which helps newly arrived immigrants from China by providing aid and scholarships. Thanks to Wing's sacrifices his children were afforded opportunities he never had and, along the way, Wing enriched the lives of many Chinese immigrants. Wing Lau's life was a life well-lived. Wing Chung Lau was the beloved husband of Mooie Chan for 62 years, Loving father of Linda (Benjamin) Tam, Richard (Stephen Halpert) Lau, and Deborah (James) McGough, Cherished grandfather of Ruth Tam, Anna (Joseph) Kim, Laura (Travis) Mui, and Joseph (Sarah) Tam, Mary McGough, Andrew McGough, Eleanor McGough, Thomas McGough, and Ian McGough; Adored great-grandfather of Lydia Mui
