Soo Won Chan Leu, aged 97, passed away on September 6, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. Soo was born in Guangdong, Taishan, China in 1926. For 68 years, Soo was Guie Kee Leu’s beloved wife. They married and moved to Chicago’s Chinatown to raise their family and build their legacy.
As their family grew, so did the restaurant that Soo and Guie started in Franklin Park. Leu’s Oriental Chop Suey served and nourished people for 41 years. And Soo’s nourishing nature went far beyond the restaurant. A woman of great faith, she was an active member of the Chinese Christian Union Church. She was known for her quiet generosity and kind spirit, helping those around her wherever she saw a need. Through the years Soo welcomed many people into her home and showed her love and caring through the special meals she prepared for her family and friends. We will all deeply miss her humor, generosity, and smile.
Soo is survived by her five children: George (Angel), Diana (Ken) Wong, David (Teresa), Donald (Estela), and Dennis (Louise Wood) Leu. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, of whom she was very proud: Andrea, Alvan (Gloria), Geoffrey (Serena), Emily (David Anthony), Daniel (Katie), Phillip (Trisha), Scott (Regena), Samantha (Joseph) Balogh, Robert (Emily), Joshua, Nathaniel (Sarah), and Michael Leu. She always spoke of her grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren as her greatest blessing. In addition, she was close to and is survived by her half-sisters Lye (David) Baynham, Mimi (Steve) Band, and half-brother William (the late Ruth) Chan, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother Shem Ping Dong, father Bok Cheong Chan, her sister Fueng Wun (the late Truck Man) Chan, half-brother John Chan, and granddaughters Stephanie and Stacie Leu.
Services will be held Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at Dalcamo Funeral Home, 470 W 26th St, Chicago, IL 60616. Visitation will be from 9:00 am.-10:30 am. with the service from 10:30 am-11:30 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Soo’s name may be made to the Chinese Christian Union Church Chinatown’s Benevolence Fund.
