With heartfelt sorrow, we share that Julia “Julie” Downs (née Kroulaidis), 70, of Chicago, IL, passed away peacefully at home on May 19, 2026.
Born in 1955 to the late John and late Kathleen Kroulaidis, Julie proudly called the Bridgeport neighborhood her lifelong home. She embraced her Irish heritage with passion as both a champion Irish step dancer and an accomplished dance teacher. Her commitment to preserving and showcasing Irish culture remains an enduring legacy.
Julie was an avid reader and a talent in the kitchen – her specialty was her Irish soda bread. As an adult, she successfully earned her bachelor’s degree from DePaul University while working there full-time. Over the years, she wore many hats professionally and formed lifelong friendships wherever she worked.
Julie is survived by her beloved husband of 28 years, John, who lovingly cared for her as she battled cancer over the past year; her children Patrick (Lucy) Dillon, Jr. and Bridget (Sam) Wheeler; her adored grandchildren, Jaxon, Aria, Rori and Mac; caring stepmother of Samantha (Stephen) Wolf and Katie Downs; loving step-grandmother of Avan, Owen and Madison.
Dear sister of Jim “Krow” (late D.D.) Kroulaidis, Betty (late Bo) Lovell and the late Kathy “Punkins” (late Skip) Ryan. She was a wonderful aunt, cousin, and friend to many and had a remarkable gift for making those around her feel special. Her lively spirit and candor will be deeply missed.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 28, 2026, from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Dalcamo Funeral Home. Funeral Friday, May 29, from the Funeral Home at 9:15 am to Nativity of Our Lord Church for Mass at 10:00 am. Private interment.
