Judith Ann "Judy" Hobson

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Judith Ann "Judy" Hobson, who peacefully passed away on July 18, 2026, at the age of 82. Born on September 1, 1943, Judy lived a life defined by quiet strength, unwavering devotion to her family, and a lifelong commitment to caring for others.

Judy was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 45 years, Robert Hobson, whose memory she carried with love throughout the 14 years following his passing. She was also preceded in death by her cherished son, Peter Hobson, who passed away as a young child, as well as her parents, John Murphy and Florence (Klein) Murphy, and her sister, Barbara Jacqueline Doherty.

She is lovingly survived by her children, Katherine Hobson, Michael Hobson (Jennifer Hobson), and Bridget Hobson; her grandchildren, Isabella, Clyde, and Sol Hobson; a nephew; and several nieces.

Judy graduated from the University of Illinois before beginning a long and meaningful career as an elementary school teacher with the Chicago Public Schools. She believed deeply in the importance of education and especially the power of reading. Throughout her career, she thoughtfully built an extensive classroom library, providing generations of students with books that sparked curiosity, imagination, and a love of learning. Her dedication to literacy and to the children she taught was recognized within the school system, but her greatest reward was seeing her students flourish.

Those who knew Judy will remember her calm, composed presence and the quiet strength that carried her through life's joys and challenges. She was an exceptional listener who offered thoughtful support, wisdom, and encouragement without ever seeking recognition. Deeply devoted to her husband and family, Judy found her greatest happiness simply being with the people she loved. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother and grandmother, and someone her family could always count on.

Judy had a creative spirit and an artistic eye. She had a remarkable ability to make everything around her more beautiful, whether it was her home, her classroom, or a family gathering. She appreciated life's simple pleasures, especially her morning cup of coffee, and treasured time spent with her family and close friends.

Her greatest accomplishment was the life she built with her family and the countless lives she touched through her kindness, patience, and dedication as an educator. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, resilience, creativity, and quiet grace that will continue to inspire all who knew and loved her.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at Old St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1500 S. Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL 60605. Interment Holy Sepulchre Cemetery
