Helene came to the US in 1956. Always a high achiever academically in China, her studies were interrupted upon the Japanese occupation of China. She resumed her studies upon arrival in Chicago in 1956. She enrolled at Wright Junior College where she learned English as a second language. She transferred to Illinois Institute of Technology where she made the Dean's List, earned a B.S. with a major in chemistry. She was a long time project chemist for De Soto Chemical Company in Des Plaines.
